UCSD Jacobs Medical Center LEED Compliance Summary

It should be the mission of every healthcare project to improve the effects of the built environment on human health. In that spirit, it is not enough for us to simply design a green hospital, pat ourselves on the back, and move on to the next project. It is critical that we share what we’ve learned and what we’ve done, both successes and failures, with the broader healthcare design community. This “open-source” design approach rapidly moves the entire industry closer to understanding how to design in a way that improves public health throughout our built environment. We are still designing the Jacobs Medical Center, but in the spirit of sharing knowledge, we have developed an abbreviated LEED strategy matrix in PDF format, describing our targets and providing a brief narrative on how we are working to achieve sustainability. Sustainability Assessment of the Preservation of the Mutual Orange Distributors Packing House

We are contending with a preservation battle over a piece of Redlands' citrus history: the MOD Packing House. It may not look like much today, but underneath all of the inartful cladding and additions is a lovely and stable century-old daylit brick structure. This is based on a similar study I just completed for the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation... so, I took the initiative to perform a bit of pro bono work to see what I could do to help out with the preservation effort. Remember: the greenest building is the one that is already built.

Sustainability Assessment for the Preservation of the Town and Country Center

The Palm Springs Preservation Foundation recently asked Ecotype Consulting to prepare this report to analyze the sustainability of preserving and reusing the historic Town and Country Center (T&CC), located at 174 North Palm Canyon Drive. I was honored to perform the work, and truly enjoyed getting familiar with a hidden Palm Springs landmark that I had been previously unaware of.
